About Statistics Department

             The Department of Statistics, Cotton College, was established in 1954, under the Gauhati University with Prof.Bangshidhar Das at the helm and Late Prof.NanidharKalita as his associate. The honours course was started in the next year under their capable initiative. Thereafter, the Post Graduate course was introduced in 1986 during the term of the third Head of the Department Prof.JyotishSarmaBarua. During that time the Three year Degree Course was also introduced. By this time, Department of Statistics had proved its worth and the number of students steadily increased as also the number of faculty members. Prof.Jishnu Dutta, the fourth Head of the Department was very active in all academic and non-academic activities of the college and retired as the Dean of the college. It was during the term of the next Head of the Department Ms. Kamala Chaudhury that the course structure of the UG courses changed to the 1+1+1 system and that of the PG course moved to the semester system. She was succeeded by Dr.GeetaDeyin the year 2011. In the first phase of her tenure, the PG courses of the college had moved under the jurisdiction of the Cotton College State University. However, the faculty members of the Department continued to take classes and were involved in all academic activities of the PG courses.Laterunder the Cotton University Act, 2017 of the Assam Legislative Assembly,Cotton College merged with Cotton College State University to form Cotton University. During the tenure of current Head, Dr. Kamal Barman, the course structure of the UG and PG courses moved to the newly introduced UGC-CBCS system.

              There are at present 10 dedicated faculty members in the Department -Dr. Kamal Barmanas the HoD, Dr.GeetaDey, Dr.SangeetaBarthakur, Dr. Bandana Sharma, Dr.RumaTalukdar, Dr.Dulumoni Das, Mr.Dibyajyoti Bora, Dr.SangeetaKalita, Dr.SurobhiDeka and Ms.Alaka Das. Under their guidance, the students of the department have been able to prove their worth in all spheres. The students are supervised to take up projects on various topics of social relevance which helps them to experience real life situations through field visits and handling of data by collection, presentation and analysis, over and above getting awareness on important issues. The students of the department are also required to present seminars on different topics and this grooms them for the future and also instils in them a sense of confidence. The brilliant students are encouraged to take up internships in Institutions like ISI,IISc etc. The students are also encouraged to showcase their skills and abilities towards literacy and cultural competence through the departmental annual Wall Magazine “Pratyush” and the departmental functions.

              It is noteworthy that the students of the department have always shown brilliant performance in the University examinations. The department takes pride in producing Best Graduates under the Gauhati University since its inception in almost all the academic years. The three batches of students of the undergraduate course under the Cotton College State University also came out with flying colours with the topper in statistics being the second best in the university every year. The students have also proved their excellence in extracurricular activities and have been successful in placing themselves in respectable positions after graduating from Cotton. It is noteworthy that the post graduates of the Dept. have been placed as Assistant Professor in various colleges of Assam.

             Under the stewardship of Ms. Kamala Chaudhury, the department received a grant for infrastructure and research development under the FIST programme of the DST, Govt. of India. With this fund, the computer laboratory of the department was renovated and upgraded. Presently the laboratory houses 17computers and 14 printers. In addition to the Computer Laboratory, the department also houses a “Smart Class” and a Departmental Library cum Seminar Room. The library is equipped with 515 Books, 208 Journals and 22 Periodicals.It has also been receiving financial assistance from the UGC since 2008-09 under the scheme Rejuvenation of Basic Scientific Research in Indian Universities/PG Colleges’.

             The Department of Statistics is one of the constituent departments of the Interdisciplinary Climate Research Centre (ICRC), Cotton University, along with the Department of Physics, Geology & Geography. The ICRC, Cotton University is housed in the Department of Physics. Dr SangeetaBarthakur, Associate Professor, Department of Statistics is the Deputy Director of ICRC. The mission of ICRC is to increase scientific and public understanding of the causes and impacts of climate change through fundamental research and effective education and outreach. The Department of Statistics has taken active part in organizing all the events of the ICRC, starting from the 1st International Conference on Climate Science during 7th – 8th March, 2016, as also all other workshops organised there after and finally the North East India Energy Conclave which was held during 6th – 7th June, 2018.
